On 23 March, Albanian youth gathered at Tirana Central Church to participate in Global Youth Day (GYD), an annual initiative encouraging young people to engage in community service. Under the theme “Community Transformed,” participants organised a blood donation campaign in partnership with the Qendra e Transfuzionit të Gjakut (Blood Transfusion Centre) and assembled hygiene kits for distribution to disadvantaged families in the neighbourhood.

A Call to Serve Through Blood Donation
Dr Viola Konimi, a Qendra e Transfuzionit të Gjakut representative and part of the medical team supporting the initiative, emphasised the life-saving impact of the volunteers’ actions. “The average demand for blood in our country is 100 donations per day. Every donation is vital, as it can save up to three lives,” she stated.
For first-time donor Mario Shushka, the experience was unforgettable—both daunting and deeply rewarding. “I had always wanted to donate blood but never had the courage. I felt some anxiety, but also a great sense of fulfilment. Knowing that such a small act could save lives was truly rewarding.”
Health Ministries leader Irilda Braho emphasised the blood donation initiative’s spiritual significance: “Donating blood follows the model of Jesus. He helped many people during His life, and in the end, He gave His life for us.” Addressing how quickly first-time donors’ fears can dissipate, she added, “The first step is raising awareness about the importance of this action.”
Faith and Community Impact
Beyond the humanitarian efforts, the event fostered a spirit of unity and service through music, prayer, and moments of reflection. Prayer Ministiries leader, Euxhenia Bregasi, described the experience as deeply moving. “Being part of such a passionate group of young people was uplifting and encouraging. Seeing faith and service come together to make a tangible impact on our community was humbling.”
Adriel Henke, Albanian Mission Youth Director and event organiser, reflected on the broader mission of service. “Blood donation is just one of many ways we can serve the community. As the story of the prophet Nehemiah shows, we don’t need wealth or influence to make a difference—just sensitive hearts and the faith to act.”
For volunteer Restiola Bregasi, the experience was a reminder of the power of solidarity and faith in action. “It was truly a beautiful and meaningful time! Coming together with the shared purpose of helping those in need was a blessing. The sense of unity and compassion reminded us all of the power we have to make a difference in others’ lives.”
