"Mission to the Cities" Initiative Creates Zeal for Evangelism in TED

3 July 2013 New York, United States [tedNEWS/ANN] The NY13 initiative is the first in the “Mission to the Cities” (MTTC) campaign, which was unveiled in 2011 by Adventist Church President, Pastor Ted N. C. Wilson. This year’s outreach meetings and training in New York City are the basis for future outreach campaigns worldwide.

The Revelation of Hope Manhattan series with Pastor Wilson, which took place in June 2013, was part of a much larger outreach to Greater New York and neighboring New Jersey and Southern Connecticut. In one of the largest outreaches in Seventh-day Adventist history over 400 evangelistic meetings are being conducted in 2013. It was forecast that by the end of June well over 2000 individuals would have been baptised. Pastors, lay people and church administrators are actively involved in the mission of the church.

The International Field School of Evangelism, for over 550 attendees, was held from 7 – 29 June, at the Luso Brazilian Adventist Church in Corona, New York. The goal was to equip leaders with tools to launch massive evangelistic outreach initiatives in over 650 cities in the world. Twenty-four of the participants were from the Trans-European Division (TED), five from the TED office and 19 from the British Union Conference.

The first big MTTC campaign in the TED will be in London in October this year. The church will host more than 100 evangelism initiatives and Bible schools in London. Members are encouraged to reach out to their circle of influence. In addition to traditional billboard and Underground posters, a clever advertising campaign includes the “Are You Tired” project. Adventist young people will place a “Sabbath couch” on a city sidewalk and offer to let passers-by sit and rest. It’s an opportunity to ask what they would do with a 24-hour break each week, introduce the concept of Sabbath, and invite them to an upcoming meeting nearby. The goal is to have 50,000 people sit on the couch over time leading up to meetings.

“One cannot help but get excited in anticipation of what the Lord will do in London when all the churches pull together in the spirit of cooperation for the ‘Mission to the Cities’ initiative” says Pastor Michael Hamilton, TED Sabbath School and Personal Ministries Director. “Practical lessons have been taught and it is my prayer that much will be implemented in preparation for a bumper harvest in the months and years to come”, concluded Hamilton.

At the forefront of planning for the MTTC in Europe, Pastor Janos Kovacs-Biro, TED Evangelism Director and leader of the MTTC initiative, reports that the Division is also planning meetings next year in other cities, including Belgrade, Serbia; Budapest, Hungary; Dublin, Ireland; Split, Croatia; and Copenhagen, Denmark.  “We want to establish community based churches throughout different cities by raising awareness of relevant social issues, manifest the love of Jesus Christ and have a positive impact on people’s lives”, says Kovacs-Biro.

Let us pray that our members across the TED will be moved by the Holy Spirit to get involved in some aspect of the MTTC programme. [tedNEWS]
