15 February | Latakia, Syria [ADRA Europe with tedNEWS]
The death toll has now surpassed 35,000 in Türkiye* and Northern Syria in the aftermath of the 7.8 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that struck the region in the early hours of Monday 6 February. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that up to 26 million people in Türkiye and Syria could be affected by the disaster, including about five million who are already considered most vulnerable.
ADRA Syria staff have been deployed to the affected areas and are already serving thousands. The greatest needs have been identified as shelter, healthcare and food; as well as access to water, sanitation and hygiene services, to avoid the spread of illnesses such as cholera. It is also a priority to support affected families through the harsh below zero temperatures during winter weeks, and help decongest overcrowding at collective shelters.
Food Supplies
Between 10-12 February 2023, ADRA distributed hot meals in Sports City Shelter, the largest collective shelter in Latakia, Syria. Additionaly, 425 food parcels were distributed in the area, containing sufficient dry and canned food to feed a family for approximately five days. In the city of Aleppo, Syria, nearly 1,400 people were fed; and in Hama, Syria, ADRA is distributing mattresses.
Water and Sanitation
To repair essential water networks in the vicinity of Latakia, ADRA donated two generators. Additionally, the team is providing assistance to repair the water and sanitation facilities.
