On Saturday 16 June, The Mission Community Choir based at Leamington Spa Seventh-day Adventist church in the English Midlands, made its public debut at the town centre Leamington Peace Festival.

Leamington Peace Festival 2018The Mission Community Choir has been running for just over a year. They were allocated a slot on the main stage at midday. The original intention behind the formation of the choir, apart from giving its members the chance to sing together and praise God, was to open its doors to the wider community. This public performance gave the choir a perfect opportunity to witness to Leamington Spa and simultaneously launch the ‘community’ aspect.

Singing has been proven to benefit mental health ‒ proving amongst other things to strengthen the immune system, help with sleep, lower stress levels and is a natural antidepressant. For that reason The Mission Community Choir specifically supported this positive approach through wearing brightly coloured T-shirts for the event.

Their singing was really positively received, especially their rendition of ‘I Sing Because I’m Happy’. This got everyone smiling and even encouraged some young people from the audience to join them on stage.

The Leamington Peace Festival, is an annual event which was celebrated its 40th anniversary this year. The Leamington church has for many years run a highly popular Health Expo stall at the Festival, but this year they followed up with a series of weekly events to promote general well-being in the community. This included a healthy eating workshop, a craft workshop, a mindfulness workshop and then a month after the Peace Festival, a follow-up health check. [tedNEWS]
