Since the beginning of the lockdown in 2020, Pathfinder Clubs have increased eHonours training options, including such skills as Podcasting, Media Broadcast Ministry, and Mobile Technology.<\/em><\/p>\n

Just like many others around the world, the Seventh-day Adventist Pathfinder Club members in the United Kingdom have lost a lot after a lockdown was declared in March 2020. Camps and large youth gatherings, for instance, have been cancelled indefinitely.<\/p>\n

Some leaders think there\u2019s an upside to \u201cthe new normal,\u201d as it has triggered an increasing offering of eHonours, or courses members can take online to learn new skills covering a wide variety of interests.<\/p>\n

In the British Union Conference (BUC), a church region that includes England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, the new reality has translated into a growing use of technological tools to attract and train a new generation of Pathfinders, said Adventist Review Media Lab Director Daryl Gungadoo. UK-based Gungadoo has been instrumental as a developer and instructor of several of the new eHonours options.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an initiative that has started in conversations with BUC youth leader Dejan Stojkovi\u0107,\u201d Gungadoo said after hosting one of the eHonours courses in late June 2020. \u201cIt has been held over Zoom and Facebook Live initially for the territory of Great Britain, but quickly expanded as a global service.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gungadoo revealed that between 200 and 500 participants are coming every week from the United Kingdom, the United States, the Caribbean, Australia, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n

Podcasting eHonour<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Podcast<\/a>One of the newest eHonours options is Podcasting, a joint initiative between the BUC and Adventist Review Ministries. Podcasting is a market, Gungadoo said, that has been growing exponentially since the mid-2010s due to a sociological trend of people wanting mobility, flexibility, and choice. \u201cWhat Netflix created for the TV audience, podcasting did for radio, following the motto \u2018Any Content, Anywhere, Anytime,\u2019\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

According to Gungadoo, the first goal of the new eHonour is that Pathfinders can expand their knowledge regarding specialised podcasts (as consumers) in a day and age of confinement.<\/p>\n

\u201cTechnologically savvy Pathfinders can help their elders figure out how to subscribe to podcasts, which is especially useful for people who are \u2018stuck\u2019 in retirement homes,\u201d Gungadoo said.<\/p>\n

At the same time, he believes that by creating podcasts based on their church or personal experience, Pathfinders can reflect and express their faith.<\/p>\n

Podcasting Syllabus<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Podcasting eHonour syllabus includes learning to define the terms RSS, aggregator, and Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), among others. Pathfinders have to show they are familiar with recording hardware, including microphones and mixers, and DAW tools such as Adobe Audition and Audacity.<\/p>\n

\u201cPathfinders must also demonstrate proficiency publishing their podcasts, showing them online, and sharing them,\u201d Gungadoo said. \u201cAs they do, they are also invited to reflect on how podcasting can be used for evangelism and nurture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gungadoo said it is not difficult to start a podcast as long as you have a good microphone, a computer, and audio editing skills. It is more challenging, he said, to persevere and continue to produce episodes on a daily\/weekly\/monthly basis when ideas run dry.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut successful and popular podcasts are the ones that are consistent over time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Prospective eHonours<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gungadoo believes this is not the end, as other sets of skills that were somehow marginalised are now being used to adapt to the \u201cnew normal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe could increase our offer with topics such as \u2018How to Live-stream Your Church,\u2019 or \u2018Live-streaming a House Church,\u2019\u201d Gungadoo said. \u201cSo, in the near future, these kinds of skills might see themselves as Pathfinder honours as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
