The projects have been planned in collaboration with the local community and authorities based on locally defined needs. The projects are sustainable because the community and local authorities take the responsibility for running the schools, and maintaining buildings and water wells after they have been handed over by ADRA Ethiopia. The seven schools that have been built so far provide education for 5,500 children. A number of volunteers are also involved in the training of villagers in health, family planning and environmental issues. Moreover, local authorities have received training in health, including hiv/AIDS. The high level of achievement is the result of a partnership based on equality and reciprocity. Reviews and visits in the field have shown that ADRA is a cost-effective organization.

The director of ADRA Norway, Birgit Philipsen, is very pleased with the positive mention of the agency in the Government Budget: “We base all our programmes on strong partnerships” Philipsen says. “We do not set the development agenda in Norway. This is done by our partners. It is of fundamental importance that we build local capacity and that our partners set the premises and priorities in order to achieve relevant, sustainable and cost effective programs.”

ADRA Norway raises approximately GBP 360,000.00 annually through the Ingathering Programme.
