{"id":3891,"date":"2019-12-09T16:50:19","date_gmt":"2019-12-09T16:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/sitenews\/2019\/12\/09\/the-british-union-conference-evangelism-discipleship-mission-summit-beams\/"},"modified":"2019-12-09T16:50:19","modified_gmt":"2019-12-09T16:50:19","slug":"the-british-union-conference-evangelism-discipleship-mission-summit-beams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/the-british-union-conference-evangelism-discipleship-mission-summit-beams\/","title":{"rendered":"The British Union Conference Evangelism, Discipleship &#038; Mission Summit (BEAMS)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>9 December 2019 | Hinckley, UK [BUC news]&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;God has called us to greater exploits for Him, bigger than we can dream or imagine.&#8221; These rousing words of Dr Kirk Thomas, British Union Conference (BUC) Evangelism and Sabbath School director, began a new training event called &#8216;BEAMS&#8217; (the BUC Evangelism, Discipleship and Mission summit).<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s event entitled \u2018Going Bigger\u2019 took place from 8-10 November and gathered over 400 attendees at Hinckley Island Hotel, UK. An array of different themed sermons, plenaries, songs and workshops offered by 17 presenters meant delegates received the opportunity for training in many different ministries. There truly was something for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>While chairing the Friday evening meeting, Dr Thomas discussed the BUC&#8217;s Evangelism and Sabbath School Department&#8217;s focus on &#8216;Total Member Involvement&#8217;. The aim of BEAMS is to train as many people as possible with a view to equipping and encouraging the Church in &#8216;reaching the Trans-European Division (TED) and Europe for Jesus Christ&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/sitenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/images_news-2019_Dr_Richard_Elofer.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-3884\" style=\"margin: 5px 10px 5px 5px; float: left;\" title=\"Dr Richard Elofer, director of the General Conference Jewish Friendship Centre. Dr Elofer&#8217;s advice was to identify Jewish and other groups of people and pray for communities, walking and driving, for hearts to be prepared and for God to provide a way to reach people adding, \u201cGod will open your eyes to the harvest and then you will be surprised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a sermon entitled \u2018Where are We Going?\u2019 Pastor Roger Hernandez, Ministerial and Evangelism director for the Southern Union, shared points on interacting with the community and building and maintaining a healthy church culture. Printed on the reverse side was a \u2018GROW\u2019 logo representing the disciple-making process, encouraging everyone to \u2018Grow Your Church\u2019. These and other resources to support these efforts are available on the General Conference&#8217;s \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/grow.adventist.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grow Your Church\u2019 website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The model was developed by Pastor Jim Howard, General Conference Sabbath School and Personal Ministries Department associate director, who highlighted 5 foundational ministries for every local church:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018Churchwide Community Ministries\u2019 to prepare the ground;<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Active Literature and Media Ministries\u2019 to plant the seed of God&#8217;s word;<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Vibrant Bible Study Ministry\u2019 to cultivate interest;<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Regular Public Evangelism\u2019 as harvesting; and<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Systematic Discipleship Ministry\u2019 to preserve the precious fruit of new souls as a sequential, continuous cycle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pastor Howard explained that the agricultural model was taught by Jesus and that churches may assess if they provide a full range of outreach activities by whether they cover all of these areas.<\/p>\n<p>TED Executive Secretary Audrey Andersson started the Sabbath day with a reflective devotion entitled, \u2018Seeking the Lost\u2019. The \u2018blind panic\u2019 of the woman in the story of \u2018The Lost Coin\u2019 was connected to the issue of church retention and how 16% of baptised members leave. Andersson asked \u2018How much passion\u2019 or \u2018panic\u2019 do we feel for the 1 out of every 6 who leave the Church? <\/p>\n<p>Pastor Howard spoke next on the Church&#8217;s \u2019One Mission\u2019. He described the seamlessness of in-reach and outreach reflected in the GROW discipleship model, helping churches to thrive effectively. Quoting from Matthew 28, he stated that \u201cGod has called everybody to witnessing.\u201d He further explained that \u201cSome call it a spiritual gift, and this has crippled the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The great body of lay people are sleeping giants, not aware of the incredible calling God has given them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pastor Neville Neveling, General Conference Global Evangelism trainer, got participants enrolling as \u2018cell phone evangelists\u2019. He explained how this innovative programme, AWR360, organises and sources materials such as audio sermons and studies which are then forwarded to friends of cell evangelists through an automated system. A disciple is a learner (Matthew 11:28); a lover (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john+14%3A15&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 14:15<\/a>); a follower (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matt+4%3A19&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt 4:19<\/a>) and a witness (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+1%3A8&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 1:8<\/a>). A disciple of Christ is a person who lives the life of Christ and reflects that life. Based on Matthew 10:8, he shared the approach of finding a \u2018person of peace\u2019 in a local area, and becoming a blessing to that home, healing and introducing them to the Kingdom of God.<\/p>\n<p>At the \u2018WOW Club\u2019, led by Yvonne Cummins and Maria and Earl Samuel, children also explored \u2018Going bigger with God\u2019, covered through a newly written play and other creative means. Jaden, 11, said, \u201cI have learned new songs and it was actually fun, with lots of fun activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The closing sermon by Dr James Yansen was entitled &#8216;When God is enthroned&#8217;, in which he shared how the more we connect with God, the more He transforms our minds. He shared the story about Satanists in attendance at a local church service when their 5-year-old responded to an altar call and prayed in front of the congregation. These included the people who have left the Church; the UK&#8217;s majority population; ethnic minorities and the Church&#8217;s young people.
