He quit his job as an engineer in 2014 to work full time in \u201cbusiness evangelism,\u201d as he calls it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe store is important because it offers healthy food,\u201d Zel\u010ds said after showing visitors around a centrally located store filled with plant-based meat, cheese, and ice cream products alongside bags of organic lentils, beans, and popcorn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/sitenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/images_news-2_Adventist-Latvia-vegan-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-3221\" src=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/sitenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/images_news-2_Adventist-Latvia-vegan-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" style=\"margin-right: 10px; float: left;\" title=\"A salesperson, left, assisting a customer at the Dabas Stacija health food store in Riga, Latvia. White and emphasized often these days by world church leaders: \u201cChrist\u2019s method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Saviour mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, \u2018Follow Me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The passage from the book Ministry of Healing, p. 117, is the store\u2019s mission statement, and Zel\u010ds, a lanky 27-year-old with a friendly smile, repeated it several times during a 90-minute interview. He has committed it to memory, along with other passages from White\u2019s writings and the Bible. Zel\u010ds eagerly whipped out a mobile phone with a cracked screen to show a journalist how he uses a mobile app called Scripture Typer to memorize passages during his 30-minute tram commute to work in the mornings. All profit is being reinvested in the store. Customers are mostly under 30, and about 80 percent are not Adventist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are preparing the soil. We are building people\u2019s confidence,\u201d Zel\u010ds said.<\/p>\n<p>But the store has seen some encouraging results, he said. An elderly customer recently confided to Zel\u010ds that she was sad after losing several relatives. As they spoke, they learned that they both were born in the same town about 125 miles (200 kilometres) from Riga. As the conversation grew more friendly, Zel\u010ds provided information about the health benefits of a plant-based diet. He then told her that the store was owned by Christians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe became happy and said, \u2018I came here sad, but now I am leaving joyful,\u2019\u201d Zel\u010ds said.<\/p>\n<p>Another customer has started sending her daughter to the Pathfinders club at an Adventist church.<\/p>\n<p>Zel\u010ds said customers were noticing something different about the store. They express surprise that the store\u2019s staff members are always kind, even to rude customers. Among the other business establishments are <a href=\"http:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/965-adventists-spurned-by-serbia-s-bookstores-set-up-shop-near-orthodox-church\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a bookstore in Serbia\u2019s capital, Belgrade<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adventistreview.org\/church-news\/story3675-seminary-graduate-leaves-comfort-zone-to-befriend-muslims-in-middle-east\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a cafe in the Middle East<\/a>. In the evenings, he invited strangers to evangelistic events. But he grew discouraged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no relationship,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople didn\u2019t really trust me because they didn\u2019t know me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, as he prayed earnestly about the matter, he happened upon a recorded Adventist seminar about business evangelism. The speaker suggested that a sustainable business \u2014 such as a hairdressing salon, a shop, a restaurant, a school, or a car mechanic service \u2014 was an ideal way to evangelize and could show the world that Adventists are healthy, happy, united, and peaceful. As a business, the evangelism would not be financed through donations but its own operations.<\/p>\n<p>Zel\u010ds liked what he heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the way we can reach the big cities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But he was young and had little experience. So he decided to pursue his engineering job for 10 more years and gather with some friends to open a construction company that would renovate churches.<\/p>\n<p>After a year, Zel\u010ds couldn\u2019t wait anymore. He didn\u2019t want to expend all his energy at work and go to bed exhausted when he could be using the same vitality to share Jesus. He wanted to see the miracle of people\u2019s hearts being transformed by Jesus\u2019 righteousness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main idea that came again and again to my mind was, \u2018If you want to see God\u2019s miracles, you need to put yourself in a place where God can do miracles,\u2019\u201d Zel\u010ds said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Valdis Zel\u010ds - a health store that changes lives\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RRG3eKLbJZ8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Waiting for First Fruits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He began to look for opportunities and sought advice from several people. The Adventist Church\u2019s health director in Latvia told him that he had been praying for a health food store in Riga. Zel\u010ds thought that was a manageable goal. He ditched the construction company idea in favour of \u201ca very small shop selling tofu.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI prayed, \u2018God, I\u2019ll do what I can. You do the miracles,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Zel\u010ds and the health director ended up funding most of the store\u2019s start-up cost of 20,000 euros (U.S.$22,350) out of their own pockets, becoming the main owners. The other shareholders are a few church members and the store\u2019s three salespeople. Monthly rent is 930 euros ($1,040) plus utilities for the store with 540 square feet (50 square meters) of retail space and a 485-square-foot (45-square-meter) backroom. Its main supplier is Country Life, an Adventist-owned wholesaler with nine health food shops and two restaurants in the Czech Republic. But he is eagerly waiting for the day when he will be able to invite his customers to health expos and other evangelism events. He believes it will be soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they see that you desire their good, they are so open,\u201d he said. \u201cThey share their lives, and then real evangelism can take place.
