{"id":24412,"date":"2025-08-11T11:38:55","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T11:38:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/?p=24412"},"modified":"2025-08-11T11:55:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T11:55:15","slug":"reaching-people-in-post-christian-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/reaching-people-in-post-christian-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"Reaching People in Post-Christian Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11 August 2025 | V\u00e4rmland, Sweden [Tor Tjeransen]<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Six young Latin American missionaries are bringing fresh energy to <a href=\"https:\/\/watch.lifestyletv.se\/apps\/3811\/184696\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>LifeStyleTV<\/em> <\/a>in Sweden, working to share faith and healthy living in one of the world\u2019s toughest mission fields \u2014 the Post-Christian Window. This region, which includes much of Europe, North America and Oceania, faces a sharp decline in church attendance and growing secularism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since he was 17, Miguel Mamani (26) from Bolivia has been committed to serving God in mission. That year, a powerful experience of God\u2019s grace confirmed his life\u2019s calling: to serve God wholeheartedly wherever he is led.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI never imagined studying abroad, let alone serving as a missionary on another continent. Their goal is to reach people in the Post-Christian Window \u2014 one of the church\u2019s greatest mission challenges, alongside the 10\/40 Window and Urban Window.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Adventist Mission, \u201cThe Post-Christian Window covers Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other countries rapidly moving away from Christian values, reflected in falling church growth and rising apostasy, especially among young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Stark Contrasts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miguel is studying communications at <a href=\"https:\/\/landing.uap.edu.ar\/general\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">River Plate Adventist University<\/a> (UAP) in Argentina. After three years of study, he is spending a year in Sweden before returning to complete his degree.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life in Sweden is a world away from his bustling hometown, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, with 2.4 million residents. Bolivia has 137,000 Adventists worshipping in 550 churches among a population of 12.3 million. By comparison, the Swedish Union of Churches Conference has about 2,900 members in 35 churches for a population of 10.5 million.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Connecting With Secular Europe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LifeStyleTV runs a small retreat hotel and a plant-based restaurant under the brand <a href=\"https:\/\/lifestylestay.se\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>LifeStyleSTAY<\/em><\/a>. These ventures help build relationships with the community and support the ministry\u2019s aim to be financially self-sustaining.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miguel plays a vital role \u2014 whether welcoming guests, maintaining the grounds, washing dishes, photographing, or editing videos \u2014 all part of the mission to reach secular Europeans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Nourishing Body and Soul<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vianka Aranky (23) from Honduras is another Latin American volunteer. After earning a bachelor\u2019s degree in nutrition from UAP, she was uncertain about her next step.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat am I going to do with my life now?\u201d she asked herself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A friend encouraged her to volunteer with the Adventist Volunteer Service, advice echoed by a teacher. After applying for several opportunities without success, she thought perhaps this path was not meant for her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, unexpectedly, she was invited to serve as a nutritionist at LifeStyleTV in Sweden \u2014 a perfect fit. She packed her bags and was soon working in the LifeStyleSTAY restaurant, which serves fully plant-based meals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the summer season ends, Vianka will use her expertise to provide nutritional information for the restaurant\u2019s dishes, contribute recipes for cooking shows, and create content for LifeStyleVIEW magazine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn many ways, I\u2019m helping people in secular Europe get good nutrition for both body and soul,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Sharing Faith Through Health<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vianka relishes opportunities to interact with guests. As a guide on nature walks, she shares health advice alongside biblical principles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI used to find it hard to start conversations with strangers, but now I feel confident sharing both health and faith,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raised in a large Adventist church, she now serves in a small church plant meeting in the LifeStyleSTAY hotel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is very different from home, but it\u2019s the purpose of what we\u2019re doing. I\u2019m not knocking on doors \u2014 language and culture make that difficult \u2014 but I know my work supports the mission. And when new people come to church, I can welcome and talk to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A Grateful Director<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claus Nybo, founder and director of<em> LifeStyleTV<\/em>, is full of praise for the Latin American volunteers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey are all positive, with a sharp eye for what needs to be done. We\u2019re thrilled with how they\u2019re helping us reach people in Scandinavia,\u201d Nybo says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A New Mission Reality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latin American missionaries serving in Europe reflect a new era of global mission \u2014 workers moving from everywhere to everywhere.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This echoes the call by current General Conference President, Pastor Erton K\u00f6hler, at the 2022 session in St Louis, \u201cIf we want to see Jesus return, this is the time for the global church to rise powerfully for mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young people from Latin America are rising powerfully, meeting the challenge of the Post-Christian Window head-on.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Tor Tjeransen is a retired pastor from Norway who, for the past fifteen years, served as the Communication Director of the Norwegian Union Conference.<\/p>\n<p>Featured image: left to right, Vianka Aranky from Honduras; Cintia Stoletniy from Argentina, Delfina Dupont from Argentina, Miguel Mamani from Bolivia, and Isa\u00edas Arias from Argentina.
