{"id":2103,"date":"2018-11-06T17:38:59","date_gmt":"2018-11-06T17:38:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/sitenews\/2018\/11\/06\/adventists-and-war-100-years-on-since-armistice-day-11-november-1918\/"},"modified":"2021-12-10T20:39:18","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T20:39:18","slug":"adventists-and-war-100-years-on-since-armistice-day-11-november-1918","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/adventists-and-war-100-years-on-since-armistice-day-11-november-1918\/","title":{"rendered":"Adventists and war \u2013 100 years on since Armistice day, 11 November 1918"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>8 November 2018 | St Albans, UK [Victor Hulbert]<\/p>\n<p>It was called \u2018the war to end all wars\u2019.&nbsp; Sadly, history tells another tale. &nbsp;Despite the World War I (WWI) deaths of 17 million soldiers, with the injury of 21 million more, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwm.org.uk\/history\/timeline-of-20th-and-21st-century-wars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Imperial War Museum<\/a> in London records that war has taken place every single year since, killing an estimated 187 million people.<\/p>\n<p>This week the world looks back 100 years to armistice day 1918 and the end of WWI.&nbsp; Yet reflecting \u2014 and looking forwards \u2014 provides a paradox for Seventh-day Adventist Christians.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As Christians we recognise that war and rumours of war is one of the signs of the end of the age, and whether WWI, Syria or the Yemen, we still struggle with the horror of man\u2019s inhumanity to man.&nbsp; We long for the time when war will be no more, for the Great Controversy between Christ and Satan will be over, when God, as promised in Revelation 21, will make all things new.<\/p>\n<p>But until then, how do we react?<\/p>\n<p>In keeping with our being people of peace, Adventists have generally, although far from totally, held a pacifist position.&nbsp; Four years ago, at the commencement of centenary memories of WWI, Pastor Ted Wilson, President of the Seventh-day Adventist World Church, wrote an article in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adventistworld.org\/nad-august-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adventist World<\/a><\/em>, \u2018The Battle: Should Adventists serve in the military?\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cAs with other difficult questions, the pioneer leaders studied the issues using the Bible as their guide, and concluded that the position most consistent with biblical principles was noncombatancy (the conscientious objection to bearing arms). The primary reason for this position was that Adventists serving in the U.S. military would be forced to compromise their loyalty to God if they obeyed the commands of their officers. The two Bible commandments most directly involved were the fourth\u2014to keep the Sabbath holy, and the sixth\u2014not to kill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Armistice Day Thoughts from the Peace Garden\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9TMR28UVKOg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/adventist.org.uk\/__data\/assets\/image\/0020\/52508\/William_George_Chappell_exemption_appeal.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-2095\" style=\"margin: 5px; float: right;\" title=\"Chappell's Tribunal appeal cites biblical prophecy as a reason for him to sell Christian books rather than fight\" src=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/sitenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images_news-2018_William_George_Chappell_exemption_appeal.jpg\" alt=\"William George Chappell exemption appeal\" width=\"150\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images_news-2018_William_George_Chappell_exemption_appeal.jpg 568w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images_news-2018_William_George_Chappell_exemption_appeal-189x300.jpg 189w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images_news-2018_William_George_Chappell_exemption_appeal-350x555.jpg 350w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images_news-2018_William_George_Chappell_exemption_appeal-560x887.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>British Adventists added another primary reason when they were called to active service during WWI.&nbsp; William George Chappell worked selling Christian literature.&nbsp; He was called to a tribunal in Brynmawr, South Wales on 25 March 1916.&nbsp; In his <a href=\"http:\/\/adventist.org.uk\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0018\/52506\/William_George_Chappell_exemption_refusal.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notice of appeal<\/a>, he stated that &#8220;as I am a Seventh-day Adventist [I] am opposed to war.&#8221;&nbsp; Noting Bible verses that supported a pacifist stance he stated that he felt it more important for him to &#8216;go preach the Gospel&#8217; than to be involved in the war. &nbsp;Unsurprisingly, the tribunal disagreed stating that his work was &#8216;not of national importance&#8217; and only exempting him from combatant service.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How can you kill people that you should be sharing the Gospel with?&nbsp; That was the almost unanimous view of the British Adventist church.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In some other parts of Europe Conscientious Objection was not an option. They were not allowed to speak to each other, I gather, but both &#8216;happened&#8217; to clean the others cell. As a result, my grandfather was able to leave &#8216;notes&#8217; of chalky stone written on the brick walls in this man&#8217;s cell. This arrangement enabled grandfather to ask questions about the Sabbath, which his friend was free to answer in the same way, in my grandfather<\/em><\/em><em>\u2019<\/em><em>s cell. As a result, grandfather became convicted of the Sabbath and, once the war was over, became Seventh<\/em><em>&#8211;<\/em><em>day Adventist.\u201d&nbsp; [<\/em><em><a href=\"http:\/\/adventist.org.uk\/wwi\/ww1\/comments-on-wwi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for more read here<\/a><\/em><em>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Witnessing activities were sometimes reported in the Missionary worker magazine with <a href=\"http:\/\/documents.adventistarchives.org\/Periodicals\/MW\/MW19180101-V22-01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CO\u2019s witnessing<\/a> while on service in France and elsewhere. Other accounts shared their <a href=\"http:\/\/documents.adventistarchives.org\/Periodicals\/MW\/MW19160701-V20-07.pdf#view=fit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sabbath Keeping experiences<\/a>, with answers to prayer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-qSLHb0TGcQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-qSLHb0TGcQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-2097\" style=\"margin: 5px; float: right;\" title=\"Click on the image to watch this fascinating documentary\" src=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/sitenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images_news-2018_A_matter_of_conscience.jpg\" alt=\"A matter of conscience\" width=\"275\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images_news-2018_A_matter_of_conscience.jpg 675w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images_news-2018_A_matter_of_conscience-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images_news-2018_A_matter_of_conscience-350x185.jpg 350w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images_news-2018_A_matter_of_conscience-560x296.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a>Not all prayers were answered as expected and the documentary film, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-qSLHb0TGcQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Matter of Conscience<\/a><\/em>, tells the story of 14 young men harshly punished to \u2018within an inch of their lives\u2019 for their refusal as CO\u2019s to work on Sabbath.&nbsp; After the war, many in that group went on to become leaders in the Adventist Church both in the UK and across the world.<\/p>\n<p>Their experience in WWI, and their consistent testimony, bore fruit as the UK government prepared for WWII.&nbsp; Discussions with the war office gave Adventists exemptions from military service so long as they were involved in work of national importance.&nbsp; Pastor H W Lowe states, \u201cThrough the years I have reflected often on the trials of life that seem so inexplicable at the moment. The peace garden, at a deeper level, also has the potential to help visitors focus on the peace that Christ can bring into our hearts, even in times of suffering and difficulty.<\/p>\n<p>British Union President, Pastor Ian Sweeney, states that, \u201cwhile we are citizens of two kingdoms, when those kingdoms clash, the kingdom of God must take priority.\u201d&nbsp; The commitment of those \u2018alternative heroes\u2019 of 100 years ago, may be the inspiration for us, in our lives, to honour further the words of Jesus, \u201cPeace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.
