They also performed two hymns before Slobodan Lali\u0107, chair of the Association, who reflected on its founding on 14 February 1994. While Valentine&#8217;s Day was unrecognised at the time, it was a fitting date considering the nature of the association.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key highlights of the ceremony included the distribution of the &#8220;Dr Branko Lovrec&#8221; awards by Association President, \u017deljko Mraz, recognising individuals for their significant contributions to religious freedom. Among the recipients were religious journalist Inoslav Be\u0161ker, posthumously honoured for his commitment to religious pluralism and tolerance, and \u00a0Goran Grani\u0107, PhD, for his advocacy of civil rights and freedoms.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17659\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17659\" style=\"width: 629px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17659 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/14-PREDAVANJE-D.-MATAK-16x9-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/14-PREDAVANJE-D.-MATAK-16x9-1.jpg 629w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/14-PREDAVANJE-D.-MATAK-16x9-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/14-PREDAVANJE-D.-MATAK-16x9-1-500x280.jpg 500w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/14-PREDAVANJE-D.-MATAK-16x9-1-350x197.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dragutin Matak, PhD, the first president of the Adriatic Union Conference, was acknowledged for his tireless dedication to promoting religious freedom.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also recognised was retired Adventist theologian and pastor, Dragutin Matak, PhD. Matak, who served as the first president of the Adriatic Union Conference from 1998 to 2003, was acknowledged for his tireless work within the Association, where he held the position of Secretary. Renowned for his dedication to promoting religious freedom, human rights, and effective\u00a0 dialogue, Matak had previously received the Croatian Helsinki Committee for Human Rights Award in 2016.\u00a0 This previous award was given for his national and international efforts in advancing human and religious freedom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The assembly also featured thought-provoking lectures, notably by Dr Matak, who addressed the complexities of coercion in the name of religion. Representatives from nine religious communities conveyed their greetings, emphasising unity in diversity and mutual respect. Notable speakers included the representative of the Archbishop of Zagreb, Monseigneur Dra\u017een Kutle\u0161a, Pastor Mladen Domini\u0107, representing the Council of Churches of Christ, and Aziz ef. Hasanovi\u0107, President of the Meshihat Islamic Community in Croatia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17664\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17664\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17664 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image.jpg 630w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-500x280.jpg 500w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-350x196.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17664\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Minister for Justice and Public Administration, Ivan Malencia brought greetings on behalf of the Croatian government.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Messages of support poured in from guests unable to attend, including \u0160ime Jer\u010di\u0107, and Monseigneur Antun \u0160kvor\u010devi\u0107, bishop of Po\u017eega, reaffirming the significance of religious freedom in Croatia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event concluded with inspiring speeches from official guests, reflecting on the constitutional guarantees and international frameworks supporting religious freedom, the pivotal role of religious freedom in Croatian society, and the Assembly\u2019s commitment to upholding this fundamental human right.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[Photos: Neven Kla\u010dmer and Miroslav Vukmani\u0107, CC BY 4.0]<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Josip Taka\u010d is the Secretary of the Association for Religious Freedom in Croatia. The Association for Religious Liberty in Croatia is a member of the International Religious Liberty Association (IRLA).
