{"id":14975,"date":"2023-06-20T11:51:32","date_gmt":"2023-06-20T11:51:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/?p=14975"},"modified":"2023-06-20T12:02:08","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T12:02:08","slug":"newbold-pilots-worship-and-music-leadership-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/newbold-pilots-worship-and-music-leadership-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Newbold Pilots Worship and Music Leadership Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"s2\">20 June 2023 | Bracknell, UK <\/span><span class=\"s2\">[<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Lubica Mueller<\/span><span class=\"s2\">]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">The first call of the church is not evangelism \u2013 it is to worship. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">For s<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ure, there is the call of Jesus to \u2018Go\u2019 (Matthew 28:19), but unless His disciples have first worshipped the true and living God, they have <\/span><span class=\"s2\">no-one <\/span><span class=\"s2\">to share. Worship is the response of the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">created<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> to the Creator, recognising someone who is greater, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">bigger,<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and more powerful than humankind <\/span><span class=\"s2\">can ever<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. Taking place from 5th to 13th May and bringing together a diverse group of international professionals and local leaders, the primary objective of the training was to develop a worship experience that is rooted in biblical principles, inspiring, and engaging for the local church community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"s3\">Biblically<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> founded<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> worship<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">I<\/span><span class=\"s2\">n <\/span><span class=\"s2\">the studious atmosphere of Newbold\u2019s Smith Centre<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">programme leaders and<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">participants <\/span><span class=\"s2\">explored <\/span><span class=\"s2\">the biblical <\/span><span class=\"s2\">principles<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> of worship\u00a0through a series of<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0delivered throughout the week<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Our worship needs to be rooted in an essential understanding of our value in God\u2019s eyes as human beings<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,\u201d<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">said<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">Dr Nick Zork (<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Songwriter, Worship Leader, and Music Director, at\u00a0the Advent Hope in New York City)\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">in an opening <\/span><span class=\"s2\">lecture <\/span><span class=\"s2\">to conceptually frame the training<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">W<\/span><span class=\"s2\">orship is<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">our response to<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">God\u2019s love <\/span><span class=\"s2\">and<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> an act of gratitude for <\/span><span class=\"s2\">what <\/span><span class=\"s2\">h<\/span><span class=\"s2\">e<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> ha<\/span><span class=\"s2\">s<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> done for us<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">From this <\/span><span class=\"s2\">viewpoint<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, worship is about <\/span><span class=\"s2\">fully <\/span><span class=\"s2\">focusing<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> on God,<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0not<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> our <\/span><span class=\"s2\">own <\/span><span class=\"s2\">skills or performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-block-embed-youtube is-type-video is-provider-youtube epyt-figure\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><div class=\"epyt-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  id=\"_ytid_97620\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"  data-origwidth=\"800\" data-origheight=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/feFNTRH8gvk?enablejsapi=1&origin=https:\/\/ted.adventist.org&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=0&rel=0&fs=1&playsinline=0&autohide=2&theme=dark&color=red&controls=1&\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">W<\/span><span class=\"s2\">e <\/span><span class=\"s2\">need\u2026 to <\/span><span class=\"s2\">be humble<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,\u201d<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> reflected Diana Roldan (a participant from Mexico)<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">\u201cN<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ot just trying to force our thoughts into God or into someone, but allow<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ing <\/span><span class=\"s2\">God to break those down so that he can mold those in a way he wants to<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.\u201d<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">Focusing<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> on God<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> is a humbling but also a <\/span><span class=\"s2\">liberating<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">thought<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">when <\/span><span class=\"s2\">we realise <\/span><span class=\"s2\">that <\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201ci<\/span><span class=\"s2\">t is the Holy Spirit who will take care of the work, which we only facilitate <\/span><span class=\"s2\">through worship<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,\u201d<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">remarked<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">Dr David Williams <\/span><span class=\"s2\">(Associate Professor of Worship and Sacred Music, Andrews University)<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">F<\/span><span class=\"s2\">acilitating <\/span><span class=\"s2\">a <\/span><span class=\"s2\">worship experience is a significant task. It <\/span><span class=\"s2\">requires us <\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201cto be mindful of our audience and to produce meaning, not confusion for the people<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> in front of us<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Williams <\/span><span class=\"s2\">added. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">The starting point is challenging though. P<\/span><span class=\"s2\">arishioners gather to worship God<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">but they<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> come from different <\/span><span class=\"s2\">experiences, contexts<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and theological standpoints. They also enter God\u2019s presence in diverse cognitive and emotional states. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">H<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ow can we <\/span><span class=\"s2\">then <\/span><span class=\"s2\">deliver a worship service that speaks to the audience? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"s3\">Meaningful and i<\/span><span class=\"s3\">nspir<\/span><span class=\"s3\">ing worship<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">Creating a meaningful worship o<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ften requires contextualization<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> &#8211; <\/span><span class=\"s2\">the theme <\/span><span class=\"s2\">of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">presentations by <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Dr <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Tihomir Lazi\u0107 (Senior Lecturer in Systematic Theology <\/span><span class=\"s2\">NCHE<\/span><span class=\"s2\">)<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">as he <\/span><span class=\"s2\">explored different <\/span><span class=\"s2\">perspectives, purposes, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">practices<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">principles of worship<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> with<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> participants throughout the week<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">As part of this <\/span><span class=\"s2\">exercise<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">the group\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">visited different worship <\/span><span class=\"s2\">traditions<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">varying <\/span><span class=\"s2\">from <\/span><span class=\"s2\">St<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> Aldates <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Anglican <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Church<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, Oxford, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">to the<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> contemporary <\/span><span class=\"s2\">worship genre <\/span><span class=\"s2\">of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Hillsong worship<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">All were <\/span><span class=\"s2\">invited <\/span><span class=\"s2\">to immerse <\/span><span class=\"s2\">themselves <\/span><span class=\"s2\">in <\/span><span class=\"s2\">a variety of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">experience<\/span><span class=\"s2\">s<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> open<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ing up <\/span><span class=\"s2\">some\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">new questions an<\/span><span class=\"s2\">d<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> challenges that we need to address<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">remarked <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Lazi\u0107.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15143\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15143\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-1-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15143 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-1-1.jpg 630w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-1-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-1-1-500x280.jpg 500w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-1-1-350x197.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">With Westminster Abbey &#8216;in hiding&#8217; behind the Palace of Westminister, Worship and Music conference participants visit London to explore British culture, and in particular its worship tradition. A few days prior to the conference, the Abbey held a special worship service for the Coronation of King Charles lll.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">While music <\/span><span class=\"s2\">often lies at the core of a worship experience<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">I<\/span><span class=\"s2\">t <\/span><span class=\"s2\">is<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> fascinating to<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> think<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> that worship is more than music\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">and singing<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u2014<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> a <\/span><span class=\"s2\">concept<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">that <\/span><span class=\"s2\">was <\/span><span class=\"s2\">completely <\/span><span class=\"s2\">new <\/span><span class=\"s2\">for<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> me<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">re<\/span><span class=\"s2\">flected<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> Helen Diaz<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> (<\/span><span class=\"s2\">a participant from <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Italy<\/span><span class=\"s2\">)<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> on thoughts shared throughout the week<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Creating an inspirational <\/span><span class=\"s2\">worship <\/span><span class=\"s2\">that <\/span><span class=\"s2\">includes a variety of expressions<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">and allows people <\/span><span class=\"s2\">to <\/span><span class=\"s2\">exercise<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> their <\/span><span class=\"s2\">agency <\/span><span class=\"s2\">was <\/span><span class=\"s2\">a<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> t<\/span><span class=\"s2\">heme<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">that<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">K\u00e4rt <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Lazi\u0107<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">(Singer, Worship <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Leader,<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and Songwriter<\/span><span class=\"s2\">)<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> tackled with the group<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Participants<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">learned that <\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">t<\/span><span class=\"s2\">here is a place for every person, and we need to be able to facilitate that space so that they can worship God as well<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,\u201d<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">as <\/span><span class=\"s2\">DeLocia <\/span><span class=\"s2\">White (<\/span><span class=\"s2\">attendee, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">UK<\/span><span class=\"s2\">) summarised<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. As <\/span><span class=\"s2\">we come t<\/span><span class=\"s2\">o worship with <\/span><span class=\"s2\">a whole range<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> of emotions, tastes, and talents<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">t<\/span><span class=\"s2\">he\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">important thing is to make <\/span><span class=\"s2\">worship<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> a complete experience\u201d, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">reflected<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">J\u00f3hann Gr\u00e9tarsson<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> (<\/span><span class=\"s2\">attendee, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Iceland)<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">This completeness of worship experience also refers to providing the audience with a quiet time<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> by creating space to reflect<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, share and respond to the overarching message delivered through the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">various items<\/span><span class=\"s2\">of the worship service. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"s3\">Engaging <\/span><span class=\"s3\">worship<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">As<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">attendees<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">were exploring <\/span><span class=\"s2\">rich and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">diverse ideas throughout the week, they were <\/span><span class=\"s2\">curious to know<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">h<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ow to <\/span><span class=\"s2\">apply the teaching in the local church<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">when there are challenges, lack of resources, and sometimes a lack of interest<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,\u201d<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> remarked Isai Moran (Gospel Pianist<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">Musician, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">USA<\/span><span class=\"s2\">). Recognising this need, the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">programme leaders and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">participants spent a <\/span><span class=\"s2\">significant tim<\/span><span class=\"s2\">e<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> applying the principles of worship to prepare the Sabbath worship service of the final weekend. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Under the direction of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Zork,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">the group <\/span><span class=\"s2\">practi<\/span><span class=\"s2\">c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ed<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">creative <\/span><span class=\"s2\">song writing<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">The song<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> titled \u201cDrawing Us Closer\u201d they produced, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">creatively reinterprets the hymn &#8220;Nearer, Still Nearer,&#8221; celebrating the power of the Holy Spirit to unify worshippers by drawing each closer to God and to each other. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">This song, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">alongside with an <\/span><span class=\"s2\">inspiring liturgy<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> interactive <\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Hallelujah<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">song,<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and an engaging children&#8217;s story<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">shaped the Sabbath worship <\/span><span class=\"s2\">service<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> at the end of the seminar. During the joint worship service with the local Newbold Church congregation, the communal worship placed significant emphasis on the core Christian message. It highlighted that worship serves as a heartfelt expression of gratitude for God&#8217;s boundless love, manifested through Jesus&#8217; ultimate sacrifice. Hopefully such new friendship will help <\/span><span class=\"s2\">build a network that lasts. With a plan to continue with worship and music training in the future, the aim is to inlcude <\/span><span class=\"s2\">more<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> pastors and elders\u201d, said K<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00e4<\/span><span class=\"s2\">rt Lazi\u0107 expressing her desire for the event to be not<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0just a passing highlight, but an inspiration for the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As participants departed the Newbold campus to return to serve in their local churches and spheres of influence, they left with grateful thanks to the many people who worked to make the event a tremendous success including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"s2\">Ken Burton<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> (<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Composer, Songwriter, Performer and Choral <\/span><span class=\"s2\">D<\/span><span class=\"s2\">irector<\/span><span class=\"s2\">)<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s2\">Dr Steve Zork<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> (<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Professor of Music; Conductor of University Singers and Chorale<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, Andrews University<\/span><span class=\"s2\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s2\">Prof.<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> Susan Zork <\/span><span class=\"s2\">(<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Emerita Professor of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Religion<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, Andrews University<\/span><span class=\"s2\">) <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">Particular thanks went to the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Andrews University Singers <\/span><span class=\"s2\">for their outstanding<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> performances <\/span><span class=\"s2\">during the Sabbath worship <\/span><span class=\"s2\">service, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">and<\/span> the <span class=\"s2\">evening <\/span><span class=\"s2\">ChoirFest <\/span><span class=\"s2\">that was <\/span><span class=\"s2\">organi<\/span><span class=\"s2\">s<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ed <\/span><span class=\"s2\">in cooperation with Reading Gospel Choir <\/span><span class=\"s2\">as an outreach programme <\/span><span class=\"s2\">for the local community.
