{"id":1300,"date":"2018-06-19T17:12:50","date_gmt":"2018-06-19T17:12:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/sitenews\/2018\/06\/19\/world-refugee-sabbath-programming-impacts-lives-around-the-world\/"},"modified":"2018-06-19T17:12:50","modified_gmt":"2018-06-19T17:12:50","slug":"world-refugee-sabbath-programming-impacts-lives-around-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/world-refugee-sabbath-programming-impacts-lives-around-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"World Refugee Sabbath programming impacts lives around the world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>19 June 2018 | Belgrade, Serbia [Victor Hulbert\/Corrado Cozzi]<\/p>\n<p>Trapped in housing where a family of six may share just one room \u2013 and then share cooking and washing facilities with other similar families, migrants in Serbia can suffer deep socio-psychological problems.&nbsp; Two years ago, ADRA Serbia was busy providing emergency aid to the tens of thousands who weekly passed through their country in hope of a new life further west.&nbsp; Now it is providing much needed aid for those living for longer periods within its borders; helping with social integration, education, life-skills and counselling.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/sitenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/images_news-2018_2018WRS_Peace_Mural.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>Such is the success of the ADRA Serbia community centre in Belgrade that it became the venue and focus for a special live-stream broadcast on World Refugee Sabbath, 16 June.<\/p>\n<p>Refugees crowded into the women\u2019s resource room at the ADRA community centre, keen to share with the world how ADRA had become their family. &nbsp;Sotude, a mother with two young daughters, shared how she was in despair before ADRA became a part of her life.&nbsp; Now she comes to the compound each day. ADRA\u2019s \u201clittle Picasso\u201d is already giving back to the community that is supporting him\u2014which has not gone unnoticed.&nbsp; Last August, Farhad and his family were invited to the presidential palace to meet with the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107, who graciously offered them citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to focus on the fact that among the refugees there are a lot of children,&#8221; noted Corrado Cozzi, representing the Adventist Church in Central and Southwestern Europe. Interacting with the children at the centre he emphasised that &#8220;a child needs special care, special food, and secure shelter every single day.&#8221; Reflecting more broadly he noted how many children sadly live in a dramatic conditions that will he a big impact their future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"World Refugee Sabbath 2018 -  Morning Programme (Live from Belgrade)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T58TALPIKO0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the one-hour programme, and then in the spontaneous \u2018afterglow\u2019 that followed, beneficiaries at the centre expressed what a blessing it was for them to be helped in this way. &nbsp;The children\u2019s choir even sang about ADRA being their family.<\/p>\n<p>Igor Mitrovi\u0107, ADRA Serbia director, summed it up in a toast at the end of his short devotional talk, inviting all to the table, not just in this world\u2014as projects like this join communities together\u2014but in the world to come.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Refugees around the world highlighted<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A second live-streamed broadcast in the afternoon expanded the journey with stories of hope from across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. It included video reports prepared by local churches, ADRA offices and individuals as well as panel discussions with ADRA leadership in Serbia, Europe and worldwide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"World Refugee Sabbath 2018 - Afternoon programme live from Belgrade\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AI6bJtpiidg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Duffy, President of ADRA International, noted that while there are 64 million refugees or displaced persons in the world, there are 20 million Adventists.&nbsp; \u201cWhat if every Adventist just got to know two people,\u201d he said.&nbsp; \u201cWhat difference would that make?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reports from Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden, shared how members are interacting with their new neighbours.&nbsp; The church in Gothenberg, Sweden, turned their basement into a dormitory when it discovered young men sleeping rough on the street.&nbsp; In Belgium, with a continuing crisis, the church works with other volunteers to host migrants in private homes overnight, while in the Netherlands a local church is helping with education and befriending programmes.<\/p>\n<p>Other church members have been focusing on fundraising.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KmDy3r04g5U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Two young adults from Portugal<\/a> plan to climb the highest mountain of every country in Europe with the goal of raising at least \u20ac54,000 for the Belgrade community centre.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xliRPH4Egao&amp;t=0s&amp;index=5&amp;list=PLHlTyU7ArSTI4bHWyf-qRp_FnaneJ7Tru\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Croatian youth<\/a> shared how they gave up their New Year break to volunteer at a camp in Greece, while Stan Jensen from Canada movingly shared how his recent visit to Uganda was spurring him on to more action.<\/p>\n<p>This is the third annual World Refugee day programme sponsored by the Inter-European and Trans-European Divisions.&nbsp; This year, with positive input and support from ADRA International and ADRA Europe, as well as Adventist Review, the programme has had an even greater impact.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/sitenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/images_news-2018_2018WRS_Volunteers.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1295\" style=\"display: block; margin: 5px auto;\" title=\"The production team with ADRA Serbia staff pose in front of the peace mural created by the children at the Community Centre.\" src=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/sitenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/images_news-2018_2018WRS_Volunteers.jpg\" alt=\"2018WRS Volunteers\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/images_news-2018_2018WRS_Volunteers.jpg 960w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/images_news-2018_2018WRS_Volunteers-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/images_news-2018_2018WRS_Volunteers-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/images_news-2018_2018WRS_Volunteers-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/images_news-2018_2018WRS_Volunteers-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/images_news-2018_2018WRS_Volunteers-700x525.jpg 700w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/images_news-2018_2018WRS_Volunteers-900x675.jpg 900w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/images_news-2018_2018WRS_Volunteers-560x420.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Executive Director of ADRA Europe, Jo\u00e3o Martins, commented that \u201cwhile Europe claims to be a continent where Human Rights are more promoted and defended, we are challenged to see inside our borders children, women and men that fleeing from terrible war situations are not received and welcomed as they should be\u201d. Martins continued, \u201cADRA works to fill this gap that is preventing thousands of persons to live with the dignity they deserve. This is why, the World Refugee Sabbath is so important. When we have the chance to be in contact with this reality, we are challenged to do something to change it for better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be fantastic if this were our last Refugee Sabbath, because by next year the crisis would be over,\u201d concluded TED Communication director, Victor Hulbert, at the end of the broadcast.&nbsp; While sadly we know that will not be the case, initiatives like World Refugee Sabbath, highlighted and growing across Adventist Media, help raise the awareness in our minds of \u2018who is our neighbour\u2019, and gives us practical motivation to give, pray, share and befriend as we can in every area where we can have influence.
