It was during his work with ADRA that he had the privilege of meeting Queen Elizabeth II on three occasions, and received the prestigious Order of the British Empire for his public service.<\/p>\n<p>Remembering this auspicious occasion, Ruth Arthur shared, \u201cJohn always admired Her Majesty\u2019s example of Christian faith and of her humility and respect toward all people.\u201d In 2016 \u201cas a family we were invited to Buckingham Palace to witness John become an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. He humbly accepted the OBE medal and cherished the brief time to talk with the Queen,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/OBE007068-002B.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11720 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/OBE007068-002B.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/OBE007068-002B.jpeg 430w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/OBE007068-002B-226x300.jpeg 226w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/OBE007068-002B-350x466.jpeg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\" \/><\/a>In this extract from his personal memoir, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/lifesourcebookshop.co.uk\/product\/man-on-a-mission-delivering-aid-and-hope\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Man on a Mission<\/a>, <\/em>John shared his experience of meeting the Queen;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those receiving awards lined up in an adjacent room and awaited introduction. As with all royal events, organisation was impeccable. Timekeeping was as precise as a Rolex watch! I stood nervously at the ballroom entrance, hoping I would not make any mistake!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohn Arthur\u2026for services to Overseas Aid,\u201d boomed the voice of the Lord Chamberlain.<\/p>\n<p>My moment had arrived! I made my way to the dais, followed prescribed procedures and stood in awe. The world\u2019s most familiar face was just a few inches in front of me!<\/p>\n<p>Her Majesty attached the medal to my lapel. \u201cWhat have you been doing in connection with international charity work?\u201d she enquired.<\/p>\n<p>My answer was brief because each conversation had to be no longer than thirty seconds. I squeezed in a good wish by way of a few words from the Bible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour Majesty, may you not grow weary in well-doing!\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>The Queen smiled, shook my hand and expressed appreciation. My thrill was over! I stood back, bowed, turned right, and made my way along the red carpet to the exit.<\/p>\n<p>What a privilege to shake the hand of a British monarch who has, in the words of Robert Hardman, \u2018<em>Travelled further than all her predecessors put together\u2026 lived longer than any of them\u2026 known more historical figures than any living person and played a major role in transforming Britain from an imperial power to a multicultural nation.<\/em>\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif; color: black;\">For the finale, we joined an excited procession making its way to the Palace courtyard for photographs.
