However, that summer I found myself on an 18-day coach tour of Denmark and Norway, sponsored by the British Union Conference Youth Department. Our ultimate destination was the southern <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Norwegian coastal city of Arendal, for \u201cCongress \u201979\u201d. Bringing together 2,500 Adventist youth from all over Europe \u2013 and as <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Northern Light<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, recalls \u201cand parts of Africa\u201d attended,\u00b9 Pastor Mike Stephenson, the then Northern European &#8211; West Africa Division (NEWAD) Youth director wanted to recreate an \u201cOld time Camp Meeting\u201d in a big tent with the theme <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He is Coming<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11245\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11245\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Mike-Stephenson-002-630.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11245 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Mike-Stephenson-002-630-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Mike-Stephenson-002-630-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Mike-Stephenson-002-630-350x490.jpg 350w, https:\/\/ted.adventist.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Mike-Stephenson-002-630.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11245\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pastor Mike Stephenson, NEWAD Youth director<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For the impressionable 17-year-old from a small-town church \u2013 the congress experience was totally atmospheric in affirming and reinforcing his Adventist identity. Dr Mervyn Maxwell told the Adventist story from its earliest 19<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> century beginnings \u2013 a story well told of the early Adventist \u201cexpectation\u201d and \u201cimmanence\u201d of Christ\u2019s return. Pastor Victor Hall explained with evangelistic fervour the biblical basis of Adventist belief, supported with the singing of early Adventist hymns, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He\u2019s Coming<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Never Part Again<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Pastor John Hancock, the then General Conference Youth Director preached the Sabbath morning sermon which felt like an intense appeal from beginning to end. Christ\u2019s return could be at any moment. Young people \u2013 are you ready? Mervyn Maxwell, the great Adventist storyteller<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And then came the memorable appeal song. The words alone were sober enough for any impressionable youngster. But with a tune that moved abruptly from a major to minor key, and dramatically reinforced with a slower tempo in the chorus, the lyrics went straight from head to heart with deeply piercing questions? <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Are you ready for Jesus to come? \/ Are you faithful in all that you do? \/ Have you fought a good fight? \/ Have you stood for the right? \/ Have others seen Jesus in you? \/ Are you ready\u2026?\u00b3<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> With the feeling that Jesus could have returned that very moment &#8211; who of us could have possibly said yes! It&#8217;s possible of course that this observer had an oversensitive conscience, identifying not only with the appeal, but with the hope that one day in the not too distant future, he would be preaching the very same message. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cCongress \u201879\u201d was also memorable for many other reasons \u2013 not least the presence of the Polish Advent Choir. Their singing inspired, but their presence was also a symbol. Not least because they had to obtain special government permission to attend, reinforcing the belief that all was not well with the world. It was the era of the Cold War. Some Europeans were free, others were not. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But as Stephenson continued in his report, \u201cAll responded, standing together \u2013 youth from countries that had diverse culture and opposite ideologies or who had been at war in their past history. Youth from both divisions in Europe with their leaders blending in singing the response \u2013 \u2018Yes Lord, I give my heart to you!\u2019 Both rare and beautiful moments.&#8221;\u00b0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Christ didn\u2019t return that Sabbath, but after lunch \u201cAdventist youth\u2026 marched singing through Arendal\u2026 passing the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Anna Rogde <\/span><\/i>(owned by Adventists and <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Norway\u2019s oldest sailing ship)\u2026 and then on to the Quayside mall which was the focus of the Congress marchers. Following \u201cCongress \u201879\u201d, others will have attended Exeter (1984), Arhus (1988), Budapest (1992), Wroclaw (2004), Munich (2009), Novi-Sad (2013), and Valencia (2017). What do we remember? Of more significance, who do we remember?\u00a0 <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From 2 \u2013 6 August, the Trans-European and Inter-European Divisions are inviting today\u2019s generation of Adventist youth to &#8216;Plug-in&#8217; as they meet up in Lahti, Finland for the next Youth Congress. There will be both similarities and differences in comparison to \u201cCongress \u201879\u201d.
